The Fiji Independence Day 2009 ( Saturday 3rd October )
This is my first time attending the celebration of Fiji Independence Day in Australia. The Fiji community in the Gold Coast did a magnificent job in organising the celebration. This is truly unity and harmony of the community. At the celebration, alot of other racial and ethnic groups showed up to support the celebration. Looks like its a cellarbration rather then celebration to me because most of the guests are aiming for the bar, but overall, it was a multi-cultural night where everyone were happy and enjoy the rest of the night. I brought three friends along with me because they wanted to experience the atmosphere. Two of there were from Middle-east and when they came to the function they were abit culturally shocked. No surprises, who wouldnt! for a first timer meeting the real islander. The celebration officially started at around 7.30pm with me and my house mates along with my neighbour singing the Fijian national anthem. I was proud to be asked to go up and sing the national anthem for my country and for my people. It was surely a proud moment where I stood in front of a multi-cultural crowd and sing in front of them. After the singing, we dinner and to be honest, the dinner was not that good in terms of the taste, quality of the food and the quantity given because we as Fijians tend to eat alot and especially in a celebration like the Fiji Day. There were some items performed like the Fijian Hula dance, the War dance (Meke) and the fire dance. It was a long night, the celebration ended at 12am on the dot. Myself and others did a little bit of clean up and then came back home. A night that I will never forget, a night that I will always treasure the moment and Im proud to share this with you. That night was Good life!
